Prevalence of Ocular Injuries in Cottage industries in Lahore City

Abstract

Abstract

Objective:

  • To find out the frequency of ocular injuries due to occupational hazards in different cottage industries of Lahore city.

Method:

This study was conducted on 82 subjects who were working in cottages industries and having different type of ocular injuries. The subjects of all age groups and the workers of cottage industries who were directly exposed to occupational hazards were included in this study. The study group was taken without discrimination of age, gender and excluding those who were mentally retarded, who had any other pathological disorders of the eye, uncooperative patients and those who were not giving their data and were unable to give the answers of the questions. Consent of the patients was taken. Results were obtained by asking the subjects to fill the self-designed questionnaire.  

Results:

The workers of cottage industries who were directly exposed to occupational hazards were included in this study and results showed that out of 82 subjects 40.2% were labors, 15.9% were machine operators, 15.9% were those who working in welding industries, 6.1% were work as a chemist and 22% were others beside labors, chemist and welders. 7.32% labors had penetrating injury, 10.96% labors and 6.1% machine operator had non-penetrating,9.76% labors had complaint of watering, 3.66% labors and 2.32% machine operator had red eye after injury. Likewise 19.51% labors and 7.32% machine operator visited to eye doctor after having eye injury, 23.17% labors and 9.76% machine operator said that they personally used safety goggles during their work, 6.10% used eye shield and 1.22% were used safety mask. While 26.83% labors and 10.98% machine operator reported that their management provided precautionary measurement in the form of safety goggles, 4.88% said that their industry provided eye shield and 1.22% provided with safety mask. 4.88% welder reported as having non penetrating injury. 2.44% welders and 3.66% chemist had injury than acidic or basic injury, 8.54% welders and 1.22% chemist had red eye while 1.22% welders had reduced vision 3.66% chemist had blurred vision. Likewise 10.98% welders, 4.88% chemists and 7.32% other than labor, welders and machine operator visited to eye health care professionals and 1.22% welder, chemist and others did not visit to doctor. 4.88% welders were not satisfied about precautionary measurements provided by their industry whereas 2.44% welders and chemists and 4.88% others were often satisfied. While 2.44% welders personally used eye shield, 4.88% used safety mask, likewise 1.22% chemist and 6.10% others personally applied face shield. 8.54% working in other cottage industries also applied safety goggles while working.  6.10% welders and 3.66% chemist said that their work place management provided eye goggles, 2.44% welders and 1.22% chemist provided with safety mask. Whereas 10.98% welders, 3.66% chemists and 6.10% other workers get treatment after any kind of injury.

Conclusion:

Out of 82 subjects; 40% worked as a labor,13% as a machine operator,13% welder, 5% were Chemist and 18% subjects had other occupations. Moreover 7.32% subjects had penetrating injury, 10.96% had non-penetrating, and 1.2% had other than penetrating or chemical.  6.1% machine operator had non penetrating injury, 2.44% had chemical type of injury and 6.10% were not applicable for this question. 4.88% welder reported as having non penetrating injury, 1.22% had chemical type3.66% had other type of ocular injury. 4.88% subjects working as chemist had chemical injury. Subjects having other occupation; 3.66% had penetrating injury, 1.22% had chemical injury.

Out of 82 subjects; 19.51% labors visited to eye health care professionals while 2.44% labors and machine operator not visited to doctor. 7.32% machine operator did not visit to doctor. Likewise 10.98% welders visited to eye health care professionals and 1.22% welder, chemist and others did not visit to doctor. 4.88% chemist visited to eye health care specialists 7.32% other than labor, machine operator and chemist also visited to eye health care specialists.
