Introduction: Adverse neonatal outcome has been found with excessive amniotic fluid. Better results are found in patients with no under[1]lying cause of polyhydramnios. Objective: To study the perinatal outcome of unexplained polyhydramnios. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Settings: Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Nishtar Hospital Multan. Subjects and methodology: One hundred and three pregnant ladies fulfilling inclusion criteria were selected from the outpatient department and labour ward, after taking informed consent. Outcome variables i.e. preterm delivery, birth weight, mode of delivery and mal-presentation was noted by the researcher for each patient in the proforma for analysis of Data, SPSS version 10 was applied for data analysis. Results: A total of 103 singleton pregnancies were ana[1]lyzed. Most of the women were in age group 20-30 years. Out of these, 81.5% were multigravida. More than half (59.22%) presented at ges[1]tation less than 37 weeks. Caesarean section was the preferred mode of delivery i.e. in 54 (52.42%) cases. Majority of the patient i.e. 52.42% had normal outcome. Preterm delivery was observed in 12.62% of cases; large birth weight in 16.50% and low birth weight was in 8.73% of cases. Mal-presentation was a finding in 9.7% patients only. Conclusion: There should be careful evaluation (mother & fetus) of exces[1]sive amniotic fluid. Polyhydramnios due to some cases is associated with poor perinatal outcome rather than idiopathic polyhydramnios.
