Abstract

Objective: To determine the trends of birth weight among admissions in NNU of Chaudhry Muhammad Akram Teaching and Research Hospital. Methodology: The data was collected retrospectively from July 2016 to June 2017 regarding name, registration number, birth weight, gender, booking status, mode of delivery and clinical outcome in the setting of Chaudhry Muhammad Akram Teaching and Re[1]search Hospital, affiliated with Superior University Lahore. Result: A total of 221 new born babies were included in the study. Out of them 24(10%) were LBW, 193(88%) had ABW and 4(1.8%) babies were large sized. Among low birth weight babies 17 (70%) were male and 7 (30%) were female, 4(16%) were booked and 20(83%) were non booked, 8(33%) were delivered normally 16(66%) were delivered through c- section and 16(66%) were handed over to the parents and 8(33%) were kept admitted or referred. Out of 4 large sized babies 3 (75%) were male and 1(25%) was female, 1(25%) was delivered normally and 3(75%) were delivered through cesarean section, all the cases were booked cases and handed over to the parents. Conclusion: A significant number of LBW infants are still reported in a tertiary care hospital resulting in increased rate of cesarean section and poor pregnancy outcome. Poor antenatal care is an important identifiable risk factor and can be addressed to decrease the frequency of LBW infants.
